Week 8 - Natural Projection - Matthew Byrd

This photo brought a little bit of joy and wonder. I happened to turn around and noticed that the magnifying glass that I use to tie flies was focusing the light coming through my window and not just focusing light but acting as a projector in such a fuzzy just satisfying way. In analyzing the image it was even fun just to notice that the image is flipped but noticing what doesn't appear to be flipped. Such as the lamp looks right side up but has moved to the bottom now hanging off of the bookshelf rather than resting on it. It got me curious and thinking about how I could use this in theatre. Creating projections that are more naturalistic and calm. Rather than the sharp crisp detached projections, we use now in theatre. I'd love to see how to replicate this even if it is just an unfocused projector with a very soft diffused edge.

  1. Really intriguing photo and nice analysis of it. The soft edge happens so much in nature but too often we try to bring things into crisp focus in the theatre
